NORMAL, Ill. - Prior to the start of the 2010-11 Illinois State men’s basketball season, head coach Tim Jankovich served as the keynote speaker at the holiday fundraiser for the Illinois Heartland chapter (Area 6) of the Special Olympics. During that event, Coach Jankovich and Special Olympic athlete Michael Cavanaugh developed a common bond due to their respective love for the game of basketball.
That night, Jankovich invited Cavanaugh to stop by a Redbird practice sometime to show off his Harlem Globetrotter ball-handling tricks. A few weeks ago, Cavanaugh took the ISU coach up on his offer and wowed the Illinois State team with his array of ball-control skills.
Redbird Productions was on hand to capture the exchange between the Redbirds and Cavanaugh, as his coaches Diana Myers and Nicole Kohler brought the SOAR (Special Opportunities Available in Recreation) athlete to Doug Collins Court at Redbird Arena. It was a great moment for all involved.
