ROCKFORD, Ill. - The Illinois State men's tennis team rebounded after a tough loss in its last match by stomping the Northern Illinois Huskies, 6-1, Sunday at the Clocktower Resort in Rockford, Ill.

In doubles play, Timon Reichelt and Alexander Pelaez once again provided stability at the top of the lineup, defeating Maksym Bartiuk and Maksym Lagutin, 8-4. Matej Zlatkovic and Tuomas Manner defeated Bryant Poggensee-Wei and Axel Lagerlof on the No. 2 court, 8-2, and Filip Miljevic and Mya Smith-Dennis made quick work of Roman Turtygin and Max Phillips on the No. 3 court, 8-3.

In singles action, Pelaez moved back up to the No. 1 position, and defeated Bartiuk, 6-1, 6-3. Miljevic, in his first match this season at the No. 2 position, was able to take down Lagerlof in straight-sets, 6-2, 7-5. Manner ousted Turtygin on the No. 3 court, 6-2, 6-4, while Zlatkovic blanked Poggensee-Wei on the No. 4 court, 6-0, 6-0. Skip Span returned to action for the Redbirds on the No. 5 court, and defeated Lagutin in three sets, 4-6, 6-1, 6-3. The only loss of the day for ISU took place on the No. 6 court, where Smith-Dennis fell to Phillips, 6-4, 6-4.

Overall, head coach Cris James was satisfied with his team's performance against the Huskies.

"We took care of business," James said. "I asked a couple of guys to work on some specific things in their matches, and I think they did well and improved."

James believes ISU's last two matches indicate that there's plenty of room for improvement with his squad.

"We weren't happy with how things went at Indiana (Friday)," James said. "We didn't play horrible, but we expect a lot out of ourselves. We need to get better at the little things, because it's the little things that show up in tough matches, and we need to be ready to dig in and work hard."

The Redbirds next match takes place Friday, Feb. 18 in Iowa City, Iowa, against the Iowa Hawkeyes. Competition is set to begin at 3:00 p.m. CST at the Hawkeye Tennis and Recreation Complex.
