UCF Challenge Day One Results in PDF Format 
SORRENTO, Fla. -
Freshman Rachel Powers didn't hold anything back Sunday, as she fired a two-over-par 74 to finish the first day of the UCF Challenge at the RedTail Golf Club in Sorrento, Fla., tied for 35th place in the field of 92 golfers.
Powers' showing in day one was a season- and personal-best single round performance as a Redbird.
Despite the strong effort from the young Redbird, the Illinois State women's golf team tallied an 18-over-par 306 and finished the day in 17th place.
Just two strokes behind Powers, sophomore Katie Jean carded a four-over-par 76, that tied her for 60th place.
Head coach Darby Sligh looks forward to the next two days of competition.
"What a day of mixed emotions," Sligh said. "We are so close to breaking through, which is monumental for February. I saw some great golf today from all five players, but we really struggled with finishing the job at the end. In a field this strong, our placement at the end of the day is not a tell tale story of how we feel as a team. Congratulations to Rachel Powers for her break out round as a freshman. We will need performances like this from our underclassmen in order to contend late this spring. We are spending time this afternoon practicing and looking forward to another great day of beautiful weather and golf in sunny Florida."
Memphis and UTSA hold a four-stroke advantage on the `Birds after recording a 14-over-par 302, putting both teams in 15th place.
Tulane led the field of 17 teams after firing a four-under-par 284. Coastal Carolina is just one stroke behind the Green Wave, with a three-under-par 285. The Green Wave's Jessica Alexander and Kentucky's Ashleigh Albrecht share first place, as both carded a six-under-par 66, respectively.
The second round of play begins with a shotgun start at 7:30 a.m., Monday.
