SORRENTO, Fla. -
The Illinois State women's golf team came up short in Tuesday's final round of the UCF Challenge at the RedTail Golf Club in Sorrento, Fla. The Redbirds ended the tournament in 17th place, after carding a 73-over-par 937 (306-317-314).
Junior Katie Jean moved up 16 positions in the final round of play, firing an even-par 72. Jean finished the tournament tied for 72nd place after shooting a 21-over-par 237 (76-89-72).
"We fought hard today, but just weren't sharp enough to contend in a field this strong," said head coach Darby Sligh. "Congratulations to Katie for an excellent round today. We are lacking any sort of consistency which really hurt us. We are looking forward to the next few weeks of preparation for the Barefoot Landing tournament."
Brianna Cooper finished the tournament at the front of the field of five Redbirds, as the freshman tied for 62nd place with an 18-over-par 234 (78-74-82).
Rachel Powers ended the challenge in 77th place with a 22-over-par 238 (74-81-83), and Terra Miller (78-81-81) and Hannah Bachman (80-81-79) tied for 83rd, as both upperclassmen shot a 24-over-par 240.
Minnesota's Teresa Puga (70-72-66) and Kentucky's Ashleigh Albrecht (66-70-72) tied for the title position, after both carded an eight-under-par 208.
Coastal Carolina held onto the first place position, carding a three-over-par 867 (285-289-293).
The Redbirds return to Normal, Ill., for two weeks of practice before traveling to Myrtle Beach, S.C., for the Barefoot at the Beach Intercollegiate.
