IOWA CITY, Iowa. - After a tough loss Friday to Iowa, the Illinois State men's tennis team bounced back with a dominant performance Saturday, defeating Western Michigan, 6-1, at the Hawkeye Tennis Complex in Iowa City, Iowa.
ISU started fast in doubles. Timon Reichelt and Alexander Pelaez squeaked out a tough match over brothers Michael and Thomas Calderone on the No. 1 court, 9-8. On the No. 2 court, Matej Zlatkovic and Tuomas Manner defeated Pablo Olivarez and Casey Cullen, 8-6, while Filip Miljevic and Mya Smith-Dennis fell to Kazuya Komada and Zeyad Montasser on the No. 3 court, 8-6.
In singles play, Reichelt returned to the No. 1 position, and defeated Komada in straight-sets, 6-2, 7-6, while Pelaez defeated Michael Calderone on the No. 2 court, 6-3, 6-0. Miljevic bounced back after a tough loss in doubles to defeat Olivarez on the No. 3 court, 6-1, 6-2. Manner bumped up to the No. 4 position Saturday, and came out on top over Simon Blomberg, 6-4, 2-6, (10-6), while Zlatkovic took care of business on the No. 5 court against Cullen, 4-6, 6-4, (10-7). Skip Span was the only Redbird to taste defeat in singles, falling to Brad Noel on the No. 6 court, 6-7, 7-6, (10-6).
Assistant coach Branko Kuzmanovic was impressed with his squad's performance.
"We fought hard, and helped each other throughout the match," Kuzmanovic said. "We competed well, were very focused, and stayed calm in important moments."
ISU will round out the weekend Sunday afternoon at the Evergreen Racquet Club in Bloomington, Ill., against the No. 64 nationally-ranked DePaul Blue Demons. Matches are scheduled to start at 12:30 p.m. CST.
