Kellen, Redbirds Look to Step Up Play in Alabama

Feb. 21, 2011

After tying for third place in last year's Mobile Bay Intercollegiate and assisting the Redbirds to a second-place finishing, senior Jeff Kellen and the Illinois State men's golf team are set to compete in the two-day, 54-hole, Mobile Bay Intercollegiate at the 7,212 yard, par-72 Magnolia Grove Golf Course in Mobile, Ala., Monday and Tuesday.

Following a week of outdoor preparation, head coach Ray Kralis looks forward to the team's trip to South Alabama.

"I am excited about the upcoming event and the strong competition we will face," Kralis said. "We were able to continue our preparation outdoors this week after getting some feedback from the last event, and I am very encouraged by what I am seeing at practice. Again, patience is the key because I know good things are not too far down the road, and mental toughness goes hand in hand with that."

The Redbirds will take the same line up from last week, as Kellen, Will Cullen, Eric Meier, Ricky Hearden and Wils Hawn look to rebound from the disappointing spring opener at the Oak Hills Invitational.

ISU will face a field of 14 teams, including Akron, Arkansas State, Charlotte, Kentucky, Louisiana-Lafayette, Louisville, Memphis, Middle Tennessee, Mississippi State, South Alabama, South Florida, Southern Mississippi, Troy and Vanderbilt

The 15 competing teams tee off Monday in a shotgun start at 8:15 a.m., and will play 36 holes in day one. Tuesday's final round of 18 holes begins at 8:00 a.m., and the teams will start on holes one and 10.

Live stats can be found on GolfStat.com, with updates every three-to-six holes and at the conclusion of each round.
