ISU Gymnasts Set To Compete In The State of Illinois Classic

NORMAL, Ill. - The Illinois State gymnastics team will compete in the annual State of Illinois Class, Saturday, March 12 at Northern Illinois University in Dekalb, Ill. at 2 p.m. CT. The Redbirds will go up against Illinois, Illinois-Chicago and Northern Illinois.

The marks the first time ISU has competed against NIU and Illinois this season, but the third meeting between the Redbirds and the Flames of Illinois-Chicago, who have split victories thus far.

Head coach Bob Conkling is interested to see new competition.

"We are very excited to compete in the Illinois Classic," Conkling said. "The four teams competing have all had some strong meets this season along with some not so strong competitions. It should be very interesting and very competitive."

The Redbirds are coming off a loss to Illinois-Chicago,193.475-192.925, which sent their record to 9-8.

Senior Erica Schick took second place in the all-around competition with a score of 39.025 after a first place performance on the uneven parallel bars. Sophomore Apollonia Barrientos and freshman Jenna Bossle tied for second place on the vault (9.775), followed by seniors Hannah Deutsch and Shick who tied for fourth with a score of 9.725. Barrientos tied for third place on the uneven parallel bars with a score of 9.725. Deutsch took second on the balance beam (9.850), and junior Melissa Mann took fourth (9.750).
