ORANGE PARK, Fla. - After recording a team total of 312, the Illinois State women's golf team finished tied for 12th place out of 18 teams Friday after day one of the Eagle Landing Invitational in Orange Park, Fla.

Katie Jean and Brianna Cooper both fired a four-over-par 76, leaving the teammates tied for 19th place.

Head coach Darby Sligh was impressed with Jean and Cooper's performances.

"We had Bri (Cooper) and Katie (Jean) step up for us," Sligh said. "We're going to need that from them for the rest of the semester."

Rachel Powers currently sits tied for 51st place after shooting a seven-over-par 79, while Terra Miller and Hannah Bachman carded scores of nine-over-par 81 and 12-over-par 84, respectively, leaving Miller tied for 68th place and Bachman alone in 87th place.

After day one, Sligh believes there is plenty of room for improvement in the next few rounds.

"I feel like a broken record saying we just didn't get it done, but we certainly didn't do what we wanted to as a team Friday," Sligh said. "We are collectively making so many small course management mistakes that lead to big numbers. Part of that comes with our youth, but without making excuses, we must adapt and make the necessary changes in order to get over this hump. Saturday is a big day for us."

Play resumes Saturday at the Eagle Landing Golf Club.
