DEKALB, Ill. -
The Illinois State gymnastics team finished fourth at the State of Illinois Classic with a score of 192.650, Saturday afternoon at Northern Illinois University. Topping the Redbirds were Illinois (196.975), Northern Illinois (194.025) and Illinois-Chicago (193.325), who placed first, second and third, respectively.
The Redbirds had to adjust to injuries throughout the meet, altering starting line-ups for the team.
Head coach Bob Conkling was happy to see the team adjust well to adversity throughout the meet.
"We had to take people out and put new people in due to injuries, but considering everything we did well," Conkling said. "We had new people in line-ups that have never competed before, but overall we adjusted well."
Sophomore Apollonia Barrientos took fifth place in her first all-around performance with a score of 38.450. Freshman Elise Gray tied for third on the vault (9.850) in her first meet as a Redbird. Sophomore Marissa Stom and freshman Jenna Bossle tied for eighth on the vault, scoring 9.750. Senior Hannah Deutsch scored 9.825 on the balance beam, good enough to tie for sixth place. Barrientos also took seventh place on the floor exercise (9.750) to lead the Redbirds.
The Redbirds will wrap up their season Saturday, March 19 at Southeast Missouri State when they compete in the Midwest Independent Conference meet at 2 p.m. CT.
