Erica Schick was named Midwest Independent Conference Gymnast of the Year as the Redbirds took fourth place at the MIC Conference Championships, Saturday afternoon in Cape Girardeau, Missouri.
Southeast Missouri State took top honors at the meet with a score of 193.775. Texas Woman's came in second (192.525), followed by Illinois-Chicago (192.075), ISU (191.900) and Centenary (189.850).
Sophomore Apollonia Barrientos was named First Team All-Conference on the floor exercise and Schick was named First Team All-Conference on the uneven parallel bars.
Head coach Bob Conkling thought both Barrientos and Schick were deserving of the award.
"Erica worked hard all year so it was nice to see her get gymnast of the year," Conkling said.
Schick took second place on the uneven bars with a score of 9.825. Senior Hannah Deutsch, junior Melissa Mann and senior Stacie Morris tied for 13th on the balance beam scoring, 9.550. Barrientos tied for third on the floor exercise (9.675), followed by sophomore Marissa Stom (9.625) who tied for eighth. Stom also tied for seventh on the vault with a score of 9.775.
"The girls did good today," Conkling said. "Everyone at the meet looked good. I was very pleased with what our team put together considering everything we've been through. They fought through everything today, and performed well."
Saturday's MIC Championships marks the end of the Redbirds campaign as a team. Individual NCAA Regional qualifications will be announced in the near future.
