Redbirds Roll Past Coe College, 6-1

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa. - The Illinois State women's tennis team put on a strong performance Saturday in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, defeating Coe College, 6-1, at the Clark Racquet Center.

The Redbirds started fast in doubles, taking two of the three matches to capture the lone doubles point. Ariane Maack and Carolina Abello dominated Natalie Bordignon and Sara Ohlman on the No. 2 court, 8-0, while Hannah Esker and Sarah Streitz cruised past Hannah Jensen and Elizabeth Hoffmann on the No. 3 court, 8-3. Aniko Kiss and Phyllis Tigges were the only Redbirds to fall in doubles, losing 8-4 on the No. 1 court to Michelle Schupbach and Tai Lucero.

ISU's impressive play continued into singles, where the `Birds captured five of the six matches, all in straight-sets. Tigges set the tone at the top of the lineup, defeating Jensen on the No. 1 court, 6-3, 6-2. Abello took care of Lucero on the No. 3 court, 6-0, 6-2, while Esker topped Ohlman, 6-2, 6-2, on the No. 4 court. Gabby Phillips took care of business on the No. 5 court, defeating Bordignon, 6-1, 6-1, while Streitz wrapped up the afternoon with a victory on the No. 6 court over Hoffmann, 6-1, 6-0. Maack was the only Redbird to taste defeat in singles, falling to Schupbach on the No. 2 court, 6-4, 6-4.

Overall, head coach Chris Hoover was impressed with his squad's effort Saturday.

"I thought Carolina (Abello), Phyllis (Tigges), and Sarah (Streitz) played great," Hoover said. "I'm glad we got this match in after our original match was canceled. We showed up and competed hard, and I liked our effort."

The Redbirds will travel to Memphis, Tenn., next weekend to square off against Detroit-Mercy and Memphis. Matches are scheduled for Mar. 11 and Mar. 12.
