Redbird Women's Tennis Defeats Creighton, 6-1

April 15, 2011

OMAHA, Neb. - Head coach Chris Hoover saw major improvements in the Illinois State women's tennis team as it won its third conference match of the season against Creighton, 6-1, Friday in Omaha, Neb. The Redbirds are now 7-9 overall with a 3-1 mark in the Missouri Valley Conference.

"Collectively, (Friday) we played a lot better then we have," said Hoover. "We came out and played great doubles and we finished strong in singles."

Illinois State started with an early lead after winning all three doubles matches, claiming the doubles point. Aniko Kiss paired with Phyllis Tigges at the No. 1 position defeating Anna Kirshenbaum and Analese Snyder, 8-1, while Hannah Esker and Ariane Maack teamed up to win against Lessa Cadwallader and Sarah Cadwallader, 8-2, at the No. 2 position. Closing out doubles, Carolina Abello and Heather Nisbet defeated Kelsey Schmidt and Lauren Mastro, 8-3, at the No. 3 position.

In singles action, Kiss beat Kirshenbaum at the No. 1 spot, 7-5, 6-3, with Tigges defeating Schmidt, 6-1, 6-1, at the No. 2 position. Stefanie Youngberg won against Mastro, 6-1, 7-5, at the No. 4 position while Esker downed Sarah Cadwallader at the No. 5 spot, 6-1, 6-0. Gabby Phillips defeated Leesa Cadwallader at the No. 6 position, 6-1, 6-1, with the only loss on the day coming from Abello at the No.3 position losing to Snyder, 3-6, 6-4, 10-7.

"Overall it was a good day," said Hoover. "Everyone played great matches and Carolina just stumbled a bit in her second set. We just need to clean it up; we have too many brain camps. If we get rid of our ridiculous unforced errors, then we will be in pretty good shape."

The Redbirds will continue valley play as they head to Wichita, Kan., to take on the Wichita State Shockers Sunday at 9 a.m., CDT.
