The Illinois State women's tennis team was defeated by Southern Illinois Friday, 4-3, in Carbondale, Ill., bringing its overall Missouri Valley Conference record to an even, 3-3.
The Redbirds began the day with an early lead after winning the doubles point. Hannah Esker and Ariane Maack teamed up at the No. 2 position defeating Korey Love and Anastacia Simons, 8-6, with Carolina Abello and Heather Nisbet winning against Anita Lee and Vishakha Sheoran at the No. 3 position, 8-6, sealing the Redbird doubles point. Aniko Kiss and Phyllis Tigges lost to Melanie Delsart and Jennifer Dien at the No. 1 position, 8-5.
"(Friday) was not a good day," said head coach Chris Hoover. "We played well enough to win the doubles point but we started so slow we almost didn't win it."
Illinois State had difficulty in singles action, winning just two of six matches. Abello defeated Love at the No. 4 position, 7-5, 6-3, while Esker downed Simons, 6-2, 6-2, at the No. 5 spot. Aniko Kiss lost to Delsart at the No. 1 position, 6-2, 6-2, with Tigges falling to Lee 6-2, 6-4, at the No. 2 spot. Rounding out singles play, Stefanie Youngberg was defeated by Dien, 6-3, 6-3, with Gabby Phillips losing to Sheoran in three sets at the No. 6 spot, 6-4, 5-7, 6-3.
"Overall we just didn't play well," said Hoover. "We played poorly and we weren't ready. There wasn't much positive that came out of (Friday). Hopefully (Saturday) we can pick it up."
The `Birds will end their regular season as they travel to Evansville, Ill., Saturday to compete against the Evansville Purple Aces at 1 p.m. CDT.
