Final Stats Post-Game Interview

WICHITA, Kan. - Wichita State starter Brian Flynn pitched a complete-game two-hitter against Illinois State, as the sophomore left-hander led the Shockers to a 6-1 Missouri Valley Conference win Saturday afternoon. The Redbirds (24-12, 4-4 MVC) were limited to one run for the second-consecutive game against the Shockers (25-17, 5-3 MVC) at Eck Stadium in Wichita, Kan.

"You've got to tip your cap to Flynn, he did a great job," ISU head coach Mark Kingston said. "We just didn't do enough offensively in return. We played good defense today, but everything else needs to improve to compete at this level."

Ryan Court and Kevin Tokarski both went 1-for-4 with the only two Redbird hits off of Flynn. Wichita State's Preston Springer again led the Shocker offense, going 3-for-4 with one RBI and two runs scored. Spring is now 5-for-7 with two RBI and three runs through the first two games of the series. Chris O'Brien also went 3-for-4 with one run scored.

Dan Savas (3-2) suffered the loss, pitching four innings, allowing five runs on nine hits, and striking out three. Flynn (4-1) went the distance, pitching nine innings, limiting the Redbirds to one run on two hits, and striking out four with one walk.

After three scoreless innings, Wichita State scored the game's first run in the fourth inning on a sacrifice bunt by Micah Green that squeezed home Don Lambert. The Shockers added onto their lead with a four-run fifth inning. After Tyler Grimes doubled to lead off the inning, Kevin Hall doubled him home. Hall then scored on a single by Springer. Tyler Coughenour drove in two more runs with a double that plated Springer and O'Brien.

Trailing 5-0, Illinois State ended the shutout in the seventh inning with its first, and only, run of the game. Court led off the frame with a double to left field and advanced to third on a groundout by Zach Amrein. Tyler McNeely plated Court with a sacrifice fly. However, Wichita State regained a five-run lead in the bottom of the inning, as Johnny Coy sacrificed-home Springer from third base.

Illinois State will try to salvage a game against Wichita State in Sunday's series finale beginning at 1 p.m.
