INDIANAPOLIS -
The Illinois State men's golf and men's tennis teams have been recognized for an Academic Progress Rating (APR) score among the top-10 percent of all men's golf and men's tennis teams in the country, as announced by the NCAA Tuesday. The Redbird men's tennis team has now achieved a top-10 percent APR score for three-consecutive seasons.
"We are proud of the academic achievements of all of our Redbird student-athletes," ISU Associate Athletics Director for Compliance Cindy Harris said. "This recognition of men's golf and men's tennis is a credit to the academic focus of our student-athletes and their coaches, as well as the commitment of the ISU faculty who play a key role in the academic success of our student-athletes."
Each year the NCAA honors selected Division I sports teams by publicly recognizing their latest multiyear APR, and for the second-straight year the Redbird men's tennis team is among the elite group. This announcement is part of the overall Division I academic reform effort and is intended to highlight teams who demonstrate a commitment to academic progress and retention of student-athletes by achieving the top APRs within their respective sports.
The Missouri Valley Conference recently recognized members of the Illinois State men's golf and men's tennis teams for their academic and athletic accomplishments. Senior men's golfer Jeff Kellen was named to the MVC Scholar Athlete First Team, after establishing a grade-point average (GPA) of 3.66 in history. Junior teammate Eric Meier was also a first-team honoree after building a 3.49 GPA in mathematics.
Men's tennis senior Filip Miljevic earned MVC first-team scholar-athlete honors for the second-straight season, boasting a 3.75 GPA in finance and international business, while sophomore Alexander Pelaez was named to the MVC scholar-athlete honorable mention team, holding a 3.54 GPA in business.
The APR provides a real-time look at a team's academic success each semester by tracking the academic progress of each student-athlete on scholarship. The APR accounts for eligibility, retention and graduation and provides a measure of each team's academic performance.
