NORMAL, Ill. - Illinois State junior guard Jamie Russell has been named the recipient of the 2011 Bob and Audrey Weber Endowed Scholarship. She is the sixth recipient of the endowed scholarship, that honors a pair of longtime Redbird basketball fans.
The Weber's bought their first ISU season tickets in 1974 and Bob has continued to support the Redbirds after Audrey's death in 1991. The scholarship was actually funded by the whole Weber family, which includes five children and 11 grandchildren. The scholarship rotates annually between the Illinois State men's and women's basketball programs.
Head women's basketball coach Stephanie Glance choose Russell for the award for her role as a member of the women's basketball team.
"Jamie is a great selection for the Bob and Audrey Weber Endowed Scholarship," Glance said. "Jamie is a person that has great character and a great work ethic. Jamie had to sit out last season due to NCAA transfer eligibility rules, after coming to ISU from Wisconsin. She is a great addition to our program."
While at Wisconsin, Russell appeared in 48 games in two seasons and totaled 76 points and 48 rebounds. The Rock Falls, Ill., native also collected 22 steals, 14 assists and two blocks. Russell scored a career-high 16 points on 6-of-10 shooting against Canisius as a freshman.
