NORMAL, Ill. -
Illinois State senior setter Kristin Stauter received the 2011 Dr. Linda Herman Endowed Scholarship Tuesday, as announced by ISU head coach Melissa Myers. Stauter is the sixth recipient of the scholarship named in honor of the former Redbird coach and administrator.
Stauter competed in 32 matches and started 31 during the 2010 season, playing in 116 sets. The Bloomington, Ill., native led the team in set assists with 1,230 and ranked second in the Valley in assists per set (10.60). Stauter also ranked second on the team in service aces (31), fourth in total blocks (57) and block assists (52) and fifth in digs (277).
Stauter had a career-high 62 set-assists against Arkansas State (Sept. 4, 2010) and opened the season with seven kills, 55 set-assists and a career-high 24 digs against Sacremento State (Aug. 27, 2010).
"I am honored to be a recipient of an endowment named after a woman who has contributed to over three decades of success in women's athletics at Illinois State," Stauter said. "Linda Herman is truly an inspiration and role model and represents what it takes to be a female athlete. I can only hope that in the years to come I can give back to Illinois State as much as Dr. Herman has."
The scholarship, which is awarded annually to a Redbird volleyball student-athlete, was created in honor of former volleyball coach and interim athletics director Dr. Linda Herman in September 2005. Rose Stadel, the widow of Joe Warner, handed over the proceeds from the 2005 Joe Warner Memorial Golf Classic to initiate funds for the endowment. The late Warner spent three decades as a prominent business and community leader in central Illinois before his tragic death in a 2002 plane crash. He was an avid Redbird fan and supporter.
Herman was one of Illinois State's most influential administrators. She was named the 1995 National Associate of Collegiate Women Athletic Administrators (NACWAA) District V Administrator of the Year, and was also the recipient of the Bloomington/Normal YWCA Women of Distinction Award for outstanding leadership and excellence in education in 1997.
Herman spent seven years as the head Redbird volleyball coach, and served four separate stints as ISU's interim athletics director. She was inducted into the Illinois State Athletics Hall of Fame in September 2005, and in December 2003, was inducted into the American Volleyball Coaches Association's (AVCA) inaugural Hall of Fame class.
The Herman Endowed Scholarship is one of 23 endowed scholarships available to Illinois State student-athletes that are funded by private donors. For more information about establishing an endowed scholarship, please call the Weisbecker Scholarship Fund office at (309) 438-3803.
