For the third-consecutive season, the Illinois State volleyball team earned the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) Team Academic Award as announced by the AVCA on July 20. The Redbirds compiled 11 grade-point averages of 4.0 in the 2010-11 academic year.
Illinois State had five players in the fall semester and six players in the spring semester earn a 4.0 GPA. There were also a total of nine others who achieved a GPA of 3.5 or higher during the 2010-2011 academic year. The Redbirds currently have four players carrying a cumulative 4.0 GPA.
The award, which was initiated in the 1992-93 academic year, honors collegiate and high school volleyball teams that displayed excellence in the classroom during the school year by maintaining at least a 3.30 cumulative team GPA on a 4.0 scale.
Illinois State is scheduled to open the 2011 season Aug.26-27 against Utah Valley, Northern Arizona and Cal State Bakersfield at the Wolverine Invitational Tournament in Orem, Utah.
