Summer Baseball Update: McNeely Signs with CornBelters

July 6, 2011

NORMAL, Ill. - Former Illinois State outfielder Tyler McNeely has signed to play for the Normal CornBelters, which is the independent Frontier League team in Normal, Ill. McNeely is the third 2011 ISU senior to sign a professional contract after Ryan Court and Corey Maines were drafted by the Arizona Diamondbacks and New York Yankees respectively. McNeely is the second former Redbird to play for the CornBelters, with Gabe DeMarco appearing in six games before he was released in June. McNeely has now played high school (University), college (Illinois State) and professional (Normal) baseball in his hometown of Normal, Ill.

McNeely's former teammate Maines was once again relocated, this time from Charleston to the rookie Gulf Coast League Yankees in Tampa, Fla. In his first appearance for the GCL Yankees, Maines pitched one shutout inning of relief July 2 versus the GCL Braves. Meanwhile, Court had a seven-game hitting streak with the Missoula Osprey snapped June 30. Since then, he has collected a hit in two of four games, going 2-for-5 with a triple and two RBI July 4, at Billings.

Among current Redbirds playing in summer wood bat leagues, Kenny Long's ERA continues to decrease. The left-hander most recently pitched two scoreless, hitless innings with four strikeouts for the Orleans Firebirds July 4, at Chatham. David Fallon and Brett Kay are each increasing their batting average with the Thunder Bay Border Cats, as Kay went 2-for-4 July 4, versus Brainerd, and Fallon went 1-for-1 with a walk, two RBI and one run scored July 2, versus Duluth. Bryan Huff, who is one of three Redbirds playing for the Lexington Snipes, most recently went 2-for-4 with one run scored in both ends of a doubleheader July 2.
