Cooper Advances to Match Play at U.S. Women's Amateur

BARRINGTON, R.I. - Sophomore women's golfer Brianna Cooper advanced to the match play round at the prestigious 111th U.S. Women's Amateur Championship at Rhode Island Country Club after Tuesday's round of play. The golfers with the lowest 64 scores advanced on to match play.

Cooper finished the second round with a two-over par 73. She enters the match play round with a score of 144 (71-73) and is scheduled to tee off at 12:50 p.m. (CST) Wednesday afternoon.

She qualified for the event July 11th at the West Bloomfield, Mich., qualifying site with a single-round score of 75.

The U.S. Women's Amateur Championship marks the beginning of women's competitive golf in this country. Along with the U.S. Amateur and the U.S. Open, the Women's Amateur was one the of USGA's first three championships. Although a stroke-play format was selected for the first championship, the Women's Amateur became a match-play competition in 1896 and has stayed that way ever since.

As a freshman, Cooper won the individual title at the 2011 Missouri Valley Conference Championship and was named to the MVC All-Conference Team and the 2011 MVC Newcomer of the Year. The Kincardine, Ontario, native competed in 26 rounds at 10 events during the 2010-11 season and held a scoring average of 77.4. Cooper also won the Redbird Invitational with a three-round score of 222 (76-71-75).
