Redbirds Sweep Cal State Bakersfield

OREM, Utah - The Redbird volleyball team captured their first win of the 2011 season with a three game sweep against Cal State Bakersfield (25-13, 25-23, 25-17). Illinois State was led by Shannon McGlaughlin with 14 kills and 10 digs.

Freshman Emily Schneider recorded two career-high marks with 10 kills for a hitting percentage of .667. Sophomore Kelsey Holman led the Redbirds with five blocks and senior Kristin Stauter recorded 35 assists and nine digs.

"There are a lot of things we need to learn from this weekend," head coach Melissa Myers said. "It was great to see the team close a tight second set, which gave us the momentum we needed in the third."

Illinois State displayed a strong overall performance in the match with seven players recording one or more kills. The Redbirds outhit the Runners by six kills and recorded a team hitting percentage of .349 compared to a .164 hitting percentage for Cal State Bakersfield. The Redbirds continue to look for consistency from serve reception and to develop a group a solid contributors.

"We need to continue to figure out how to handle pressure situations," Myers said. "When we are not in system we need to make good choices."

The Redbirds will play their home opener against SIU Edwardsville Tuesday. Illinois State will travel to Martin, Tenn., Sept. 2-3 to compete against Stephen F. Austin, Alabama-Birmingham and Tennessee-Martin at the Skyhawk Invitational.
