NORMAL, Ill. -
Illinois State sophomore guard Chloe Nelson has been named the recipient of the Rev. Dr. Joanne Peppard-Cooke and Robert and Laura Garrett Endowed Scholarships for the 2011-12 season, as announced Wednesday.
Head women's basketball coach Stephanie Glance believes Nelson is deserving of both awards for her role in the Redbird program.
"To be awarded the Garrett and Dr. Peppard-Cooke endowed scholarships is an honor and Chloe is very deserving of the honor," Glance said. "Chloe works hard on the court, but also in the classroom and has made strong contributions to the women's basketball program. I look for her to play an important role in the program during the remainder of her career."
Nelson played in 18 games for the Redbirds during the 2010-11 season and averaged 2.9 points per game. She made her collegiate debut against Eastern Illinois (Nov. 18), recording four points, two assists and two rebounds in a career-high 14 minutes. The Florissant, Mo., native scored four points, making her first-career three-pointer, at Southern Illinois (Jan. 27) and made two free throws and recorded her first-career steal against Indiana State (Feb. 5). Nelson received the team's Redbird Award at the end of the season.
The Peppard-Cooke scholarship was established by Dr. Cooke in 2006. The purpose of the scholarship is to provide support for a member of the women's basketball team. "Pep" created this scholarship to express her support of education and athletics. As a recipient of a scholarship herself, "Pep" was aware of the difference such support can make in the life of a student. The scholarship is awarded annually to a member of the women's basketball team.
The Garret scholarship was established in 2008 by Robert and Laura Garrett. The scholarship is for women's basketball and volleyball, long-time loves of both Bob and Laura. The scholarship is awarded annually to a member of the women's basketball team or a member of the volleyball team, alternating each year.
