Hinshaw Awarded Stephen Heaton Endowed Scholarship

Aug. 4, 2011

NORMAL, Ill. - For the second consecutive year, Illinois State centerfielder Chad Hinshaw has been named the recipient of the Stephen Heaton Endowed Scholarship, the Illinois State Athletics Department announced Thursday.

“I feel privileged to receive this award for the second-straight year,” Hinshaw said. “I consider this a great accomplishment, and I feel honored to be recognized by Illinois State and the Heaton family.”

As a sophomore, Hinshaw started all 54 of ISU’s games, batting .244 with 10 doubles and three triples. The Bloomington, Ill., native amassed 22 RBI and scored 46 runs. Hinshaw also stole a team-high 31 bases in 37 attempts, which ranked third on the single-season steals list. Through the first 109 games of his career, Hinshaw has not committed an error.

Hinshaw was a 2011 Missouri Valley Conference Scholar-Athlete honorable mention selection, after he established a 3.55 cumulative grade point average (GPA) through his first four semesters. A four-time AFNI Honor Roll selection, Hinshaw earned a perfect 4.00 GPA in one of his semesters.

“Chad is very deserving of this prestigious honor,” head baseball coach Mark Kingston said. “His contributions on the field, classroom and community are impressive. We look forward to his continued growth and development.”

The Stephen Heaton Endowed Scholarship is for a male student-athlete in the college of business, with a preference for baseball and a cumulative GPA of at least 3.00 on a 4.00 scale. The scholarship was established in March 2010 by the Heaton Family and Nancy Heaton, in honor of her late husband Steve. Steve lettered in baseball beginning in 1965 until he graduated in 1968. He majored in business education, earning dean's list distinction six of his eight semesters. Steve dedicated his life to teaching business and coaching baseball. His dedication and leadership inspired many students and players to pursue careers in education and coaching. Nancy is also a proud ISU graduate, earning both her bachelor's and master's degrees from Illinois State.
