SUGAR GROVE, Ill. - Nearing completion of the second round of the Northern Intercollegiate Invitational at Rich Harvest Farms Saturday evening, the Illinois State men's golf team faces an uphill struggle to get back into contention, as the Redbirds sit in 14th place with a team score of 314.

Play was suspended during the second round due to darkness, after a delayed start because of fog in the area.

Despite the shortcomings, head men's golf coach Ray Kralis is confident his squad will bounce back.

"Today, our scores made it look like we didn't even belong in the tournament field, but tomorrow we have an opportunity to deal with adversity like winners and learn a bit about ourselves," Kralis said. "To be successful in this game, there are times you have to have a short and selective memory, and you can't let your confidence sink because of the day's struggles. Tomorrow is a new day, and I expect our guys to respond and play like we are capable of playing."

Junior Ricky Hearden currently leads the team with a score of six-over-par. Trailing Hearden is junior Matt Solis, who recorded a score of 12-over-par thus far in his Redbird debut. Sophomore Wils Hawn at 15-over-par, junior Ryan Murphy with a 19-over-par and sophomore Parker Freiburg at 22-over-par round out the Illinois State effort.

Competing individually, senior Eric Meier shot five-over-par and is currently in a tie for 29th place.

The Redbirds will finish the second round Sunday morning, before proceeding to final round action.
