Women's Golf in Fifth Place After Day One of Redbird Invite

NORMAL, Ill. - After two rounds of play, the Illinois State women's golf team is currently in fifth place with a two round score of 622 (305-317) at the Redbird Invitational Saturday at Weibring Golf Club in Normal, Ill.

The Redbirds were led by sophomore Brianna Cooper, who shot a 9-over-par 153 (74-79) on the day, which put her in a tie for 11th place heading into the final round. Along with Cooper's performance, junior Katie Jean shot a 10-over-par 154 (78-76) and is currently tied for 14th place. Sophomore Rachel Powers contributed with a 12-over-par 156 (76-80) and is tied for 20th place heading into Sunday. Sophomore Jordyn Wyzgowski is currently tied for 27th place after shooting a 15-over-par 159 (77-82). Carlee Cossell added a 18-over-par score of 162 (80-82).

Competing as individuals, senior Hannah Bachman fired a 17-over-par 161 (81-80). Sophomore Kaitlin Reid shot an 18-over-par 162 (82-80), while freshman Hayley Guyton also shot an 18-over-par 162 (79-83) in her first collegiate tournament.

"After a solid first round that put us in to position I hate that we finished so poorly," said head coach Darby Sligh." We need to come out tomorrow with a stronger mentality down the stretch, especially on a course we know so well. This is such a talented team, and I'm looking forward to watching what they can do tomorrow."

Leading the tournament is Ball State, shooting a combined two-round score of 608 (300-308). Southern Illinois came in second after the first day of play with a score of 614 (308-306). Leading the Saluki charge was Cassie Rushing with 144 (71-73). She is currently tied for first place with Piyathida Chaiyapan (70-74) of third place Toledo, who finished the day with a team score of 616 (305-311).

Sunday's final round will begin with a shotgun start at 8:30 a.m.
