Kiss remains undefeated in Redbird Round-up

NORMAL, Ill. - Senior Aniko Kiss continued her winning streak to open the season on day one of the Redbird Round-up, Friday on the Gregory Street Tennis Courts. Kiss improved to 5-0 in singles with her victory Friday afternoon, and also bettered her doubles record to 5-0, along with partner Phyllis Tigges.

"Aniko is a great player," said head coach Chris Hoover. "She's undefeated so far and will hopefully stay that way for the rest of the weekend."

Kiss advanced to Saturday's flight one singles semifinals by defeating Rosalia Tejoprayitno of Chicago State, 7-5, 6-2. Prior to this, she and Tigges beat Karyn Emeralda and Ruta Grinvalde of Chicago State, 8-3.

On the day, ISU posted a 2-2 mark in doubles. Ashton Nisbet, along with partner Shilpa Naruka of Morehead State, bested competitors Laura Shull and Kate Panawash, 8-5. Stefanie Youngberg and Gabby Phillips lost to Caroline Hedrick and Brittany Farmer of Butler, 8-3. Hannah Esker and partner Heather Nisbet fell to Alix Young and Jessica Montemayor of Morehead State, 8-5.

As the tournament continued in singles play, Phillips defeated Panawash, 6-1, 6-0. Heather Nisbet also won, posting a score of 7-5, 6-4 against Angelina Qin from Butler. Ashton Nisbet fell to Shull, 6-0, 6-0, and Tigges fell to Hedrick in a close match, 6-4, 6-4. Esker lost to Victoria Cran of Morehead State, 6-2, 3-6, 7-5, and Youngberg also was finally defeated, 6-7, 5-7, 6-1.

Coach Hoover is looking forward to see how the rest of the tournament turns out.

"There's some good tennis being played," said Hoover. "We just need to make sure we stay on the right side of it."

Play resumes on Saturday morning at 10 a.m.
