Redbirds Win Singles Championship

NORMAL, Ill. - Illinois State's Aniko Kiss took home the singles championship Sunday on the final day of the Redbird Round-up on the Gregory Street Tennis Courts. Kiss closed tournament play in three sets against Butler's Caroline Hedrick, 3-6, 6-2, 6-1, adding the seventh match to her singles winning streak.

Head coach Chris Hoover is excited by Kiss's success.

"Aniko salvaged the day for us," said Hoover. "She made a great comeback in the third set, beat a good player and is still undefeated."

Kiss, along with partner Phyllis Tigges, also finished runner-up in doubles play of tournament to post an overall record for the season of 6-1. The team fell in the finals to Rosalina and Rosalia Tejoprayitno of Chicago State, 8-5. Tigges, who advanced to the consolation finals in flight one of singles play, lost to Chicago State's Rosalia Tejoprayitno, 6-4, 6-4.

Gabby Phillips, who advanced to the final round in flight three singles, was defeated by Cam Thompson of Butler, 6-2, 6-2. Teammates Hannah Esker and Stefanie Youngberg were matched against each other in the consolation final round of flight two singles, and Esker came out on top, 7-5, 6-4.

"Aniko did great, but the team has to get back on track," said Hoover. "We'll do even better next time."

The Redbirds compete again October 7-9 at the Missouri Valley Conference Individual Championships in Cedar Falls, Iowa.
