Men's Golf in the Thick of Competition at Cardinal Club

Sept. 26, 2011

Stats

SIMPSONVILLE, Ky. - The Illinois State men's golf team currently sits tied for ninth place after 18 holes of play Monday at the Cardinal Intercollegiate at the Cardinal Club in Simpsonville, Ky. Rain before the start of play washed out a round, which will not be made up, reducing the intercollegiate to a 36-hole tournament.

The Redbirds currently hold a team score of 295 at the 72 par, 7036-yard course. Competition is intense, as only nine shots separate third and 14th place. Arkansas-Little Rock currently leads all 18 teams with a score of 283.

Head men's golf coach Ray Kralis was pleased with his squad's improvement compared to the season's first intercollegiate.

"We let a few shots get away at the end of today's round, but overall it was a much better team effort," Kralis said. "We had three guys around par all day flirting with red numbers, and I was pleased to see that. Jordan Fahel looked very comfortable in his first outing as a Redbird, and I am very confident that we have a group capable of moving in the right direction tomorrow. With so many teams in the mix, I am looking forward to seeing how we respond to the opportunity in front of us."

Sophomore Wils Hawn led the Redbird effort, carding a 72 to place him 18th overall in the competition. Just behind him is junior Ricky Hearden, who shot a 73. Fahel finished his first day of competition as a Redbird with a score of 74. Senior Eric Meier and junior Matt Solis ended their day with scores of 76 and 78, respectively.

The Redbirds will finish play at the Cardinal Intercollegiate Tuesday with an 8:30 a.m. shotgun start.
