SIMPSONVILLE, Ky. -
Behind the strong performances of sophomore Wils Hawn and junior Ricky Hearden, the Illinois State men's golf team finished eighth in the 18 team Cardinal Intercollegiate at the Cardinal Club in Simpsonville, Ky., Tuesday. The intercollegiate consisted of 36 holes, after a round was washed out on Monday.
Head men's golf coach Ray Kralis was pleased with the effort of his top finishers.
"Wils and Ricky answered the bell today and finished off strong performances to place inside the top 10, and I am very encouraged by that as well as the play from freshman Jordan Fahel in his first event as a Redbird," Kralis said. "We missed the third and fourth scores needed to make a nice move, but our play at the top was strong enough to hold our position. Overall, we took a step forward, and I look forward to competing at home this weekend."
The Redbirds finished with a final team score of 592. Arkansas Little-Rock took the Cardinal Intercollegiate title with a team score of 573.
Hawn led the Redbird effort with a final score of 143 (72-71), placing him in a tie for sixth overall in the intercollegiate. Hearden followed with a score of 144 (73-71), tying him for 10th overall in the competition. Freshman Jordan Fahel finished his Redbird debut with a score of 152 (74-78), while senior Eric Meier carded a score of 153 (76-77). Junior Matt Solis recorded a score of 159 (78-81).
The Redbirds will return home to host the D.A. Weibring Intercollegiate, which will begin Saturday at the Weibring Golf Club.
