NORMAL, Ill. - Wichita State scored the first 11 points of the game, but Illinois State put on a late rally, thanks to 20
second-half points from
Nic Moore, however the Redbirds were never able to take the lead in a 65-62 loss at Charles Koch
Arena Tuesday night.
Moore finished with a career-best 23 points, but his potential game-tying three-point field goal attempt with under 30
seconds on the clock fell short. The loss dropped Illinois State to 11-5 on the season and 3-2 in Missouri Valley Conference
play. Wichita State improved to 13-3 and 4-1, respectively.
Illinois State cut the deficit to eight points, 51-43, after 10-straight ISU points by Moore with 7:54 remaining. In all, the
Redbirds used a 19-5 run, including 14 points by Moore, the trail by only one point, 53-52, with 4:06 left in the game. The
Redbirds had a chance to tie at the 1:16 mark, but Tyler Brown's three-point attempt from the right corner was long.
Moore had another chance for ISU with under 30 seconds, but it fell short. The Redbirds got one more shot with 0.8 left on
the clock, however Brown was whistled for stepping out of bounds after receiving the cross-court entry pass.
Wichita State opened the game with an 11-0 run, thanks to five points from Joe Ragland, who finished with a team-best 15
points. ISU's Moore broke the Redbirds' scoreless drought with a three-pointer from the right corner with 15:57 remaining in
the first half. Leading 16-5, WSU rattled off another 6-0 run and forced a Redbird timeout, leading 22-5 with 13:40 left in the
half.
The Redbirds didn't get any closer than 11 points in the first frame and trailed, 38-22, at the half. Brown finished with 13
points for Illinois State, as the only other player in double figures.
Illinois State returns to action Friday night when the Redbirds host No. 21 Creighton on Doug Collins Court at Redbird
Arena. The game which will be televised on ESPN3 is scheduled to start at 8:04 p.m.
