Brown Named Valley Newcomer of the Week

Jan. 23, 2012

ST. LOUIS - Illinois State junior guard Tyler Brown increased his season scoring output and helped the Redbirds to a 1-1 record last week, which earned him Missouri Valley Conference Newcomer of the Week honors as announced by the league office Monday.

The honor is the first for Brown and the first Valley weekly award for a Redbird player this season, besides sophomore forward Jon Ekey, who has been named the Prairie Farms/Missouri Valley Conference Scholar-Athlete of the Week.

Brown averaged 19.0 points per game during the week for the Redbirds, which included a career-best 24 points in a win against Indiana State Wednesday on Doug Collins Court at Redbird Arena. In the two games, Brown shot 54.5 percent from the field, including a 5-for-10 effort on threes. He also added nine boards and seven assists, while averaging 33.0 minutes per game.

The transfer from Marshalltown Community College has scored in double figures in seven of ISU's last eight games and has made at least one three-pointer in 17 games this season for the Redbirds. Brown, who ranks No. 16 nationally in three-point field goal percentage, is second in the Valley with 2.5 made three-point field goals per contest and has made more than one shot from long range in 14 games.

Brown and the Redbirds return home to face Missouri State on Wednesday, Jan. 25, at 6:05 p.m.
