Preseason recognition continues for Illinois State senior forward Jackie Carmichael who ranks No. 30 on the CBSSports.com Top 50 Big Men list released Tuesday. Carmichael joins fellow Missouri Valley Conference representative, Doug McDermott from Creighton, who is listed No. 2 behind Indiana's Cody Zeller.
"I saw Carmichael live last season at the MVC tournament. Loved him. He's a high-major talent at Illinois State," said CBSSports.com columnist Gary Parrish.
Tuesday's preseason honor was the second for Carmichael from CBSSports.com. He also ranked No. 79 on the preseason top-100 player list, released Oct. 9.
Last season, Carmichael led the Valley in rebounding, with 9.7 boards averaged per game. He was named to the 2012 Valley All-Tournament Team, after averaging 15 points and 11.7 rebounds per game during ISU's tournament run that ended in the championship game and helped the Redbirds earn an NIT bid. The Manhattan, Kan., native was also a second team All-Valley selection in 2012, and he was selected to the MVC's All-Defensive Team and Most-Improved Team.
This year, Carmichael has a chance to break the program's blocked shots record and finish among the top-three rebounders and top-10 scorers in school history. ISU plays its first and only exhibition game Nov. 5 versus Quincy, followed by the regular-season opener Nov. 12 against UC Santa Barbra.
