The Illinois State women's tennis team started their weekend on the road with a loss on Friday against nationally-ranked Missouri, 6-1. Illinois State now holds a record of 2-4 in dual-match competition.
The one victory of the day came from sophomore Phyllis Tigges, who defeated her opponent in the No. 2 singles spot, 2-1, after a retirement. Senior Aniko Kiss, playing in the first position, lost in the second set tiebreaker, 7-5, 6-7 (10-5). Fellow senior and team captain Hannah Esker also was defeated in No. 6 singles by her opponent, 8-5. Ariane Maack (No. 4) and Carolina Abelflo (No. 5), both of whom are returning from the sidelines last semester, fell to Missouri in singles. Maack lost to Jamie Mer, 6-4, 6-2, and Abello to Alex Clark, 6-4, 6-4.
In doubles play, the Redbirds were swept by the Tigers. Teammates Tigges and Marx were defeated in flight one, 8-3, and Kiss and Maack fell in No. 2, 8-4. The paring of Esker and Stefanie Youngberg lost in the closest doubles match of the evening, 8-6
"It was a rough day," said head coach Chris Hoover. "We put up a good fight, and we
lost. I know tomorrow we'll do better."
Play continues on Saturday, Feb. 18 against undefeated St. Louis at 1p.m.
