KIAWAH ISLAND -
The Illinois State women's golf team finished with its highest rank of the three day tournament, finishing 2nd overall in the three day event.
Competing for the second time on Kiawah Island's 5,901 par 72 Oak Point Golf Course, ISU finished with their second best round of the tournament firing a combined 312 in Tuesday's round which put them at 79-over par for the three-day event.
Coming off a strong performance in Monday's second round junior Katie Jean again led the way for the Redbirds shooting a team best 1-over par 73 for a combined tournament score of 9-over par which was enough to place her in a three-way tie for 14th, after beginning the final round tied for 29th.
Brianna Cooper fired her best round of the tournament finishing the day with a 4-over par 76. Senior Hannah Bachman finished the day with a 9-over par 81, while Hayley Guyton shot a 10-over par 82, Rachel Powers rounded out the group with a 21-over par 93 in her final round.
Despite not achieving her team's desired outcome head coach Darby Sligh remained upbeat about the team's upcoming tournaments.
"There are so many shots and situations we wish we could go back and do over again. I hate leaving an event with those feelings but we did accomplish a few things to move forward with. Katie (Jean) gave us another very solid round and our ball striking got better each day," Sligh stated. "We will come back and regroup with a positive outlook leading into Jacksonville. We must do better in all facets of our game. We have two weeks to figure some things out."
Fanny Cnops of UNC-Greensboro was the tournaments individual champion finishing the three round event at 2-under par. Augusta State finished with another strong performance wrapping up the team title at a combined 13-over par.
Illinois State returns to the course again March 9th through 11th in Orange Park, Fla. at the Eagle Landing Invitational hosted by James Madison University.
