NORMAL, Ill. -
Katie Broadway scored 26 points, including 18 in the first half, to lead Illinois State past Indiana State, 78-67, Friday night on Doug Collins Court at Redbird Arena. The Redbirds improve to 12-9 overall and 7-3 in the Missouri Valley Conference, while the Sycamores drop to 10-12 and 4-6 in the MVC.
Broadway was one of three Redbirds in double figures, as Jamie Russell scored 17 and Marley Hall contributed 15. The leading rebounder was Candace Sykes, who grabbed eight boards to go with nine points. Illinois State shot 45 percent from the field, compared to Indiana State's 43 percent. The Redbirds also tallied 26 points off of 23 Sycamore turnovers. Indiana State was led by Brittany Schoen's 18-point effort.
Broadway set the tempo early, netting five points in the first five minutes of the opening half. Both teams exchanged baskets during the stretch, and the score was tied four times. However, Indiana State only led once during the period, with a three-pointer by Natasha Zurek that made the score 11-9. But the Sycamore advantage was short-lived, as Broadway regained Illinois State's lead 43 seconds later with a three-point basket. Her field goal sparked a 14-3 run that gave the Redbirds a 23-14 lead with 9:49 remaining in the first half. Broadway netted 11 points during the 4:25 stretch.
Indiana State responded with a 7-0 run over the ensuing 3:30 to pull within 23-21 with 5:57 left in the half. Sykes broke the Redbird scoring drought with a three-pointer, and Broadway followed with a steal and fast-break layup which extended Illinois State's lead to 28-21. However, Indiana State went on a 6-2 run to end the first half, pulling within 34-30 at halftime. While Broadway netted 18 first-half points, Schoen had 12 for the Sycamores.
Sykes scored the first basket of the second half to extend Illinois State's lead to six. Indiana State then cut the Redbird lead to two before Broadway hit back-to-back three pointers to maintain the advantage. Indiana State got as close as within one point, before Russell scored six-straight on two-consecutive layups and two free throws that put the Redbirds up 50-45 with 12:15 remaining. Illinois State proceeded to go on a 9-3 run to extend their lead to 61-52. The Redbirds outscored Indiana State, 7-4, over the final 2:41 to secure the 78-67 win.
The Illinois State women's basketball team remains at home for a 6:05 p.m. tip-off against Northern Iowa next Friday, Feb. 10.
