Sophomore guard Chloe Nelson earned Honorable Mention All-Missouri Valley Conference Scholar-Athlete honors Tuesday, as announced by the league office. A total of 27 Valley student-athletes met the nomination criteria for scholar-athlete honors in 2012.
Nelson has played in every game this season for the Redbirds and started 13, including 12-straight starts since Jan. 22 against Creighton. The Florissant, Mo., native has two double-digit scoring efforts during her career, both coming this season. Nelson averages 3.8 points per game and 2.0 rebounds per game. She has 48 assists on the season, the third most on the team. In her 12-straight starts, Nelson averages 3.3 rebounds per game and 4.3 points per game, shooting 46 percent from the field.
"It's a great honor for Chloe to be named Honorable Mention All-Scholar Team for the Valley," head coach Stephanie Glance said. "Chloe is a great student, who has great character and always gives her very best on the court and in the classroom."
Nelson had a career-high six rebounds and a career-high 10 points, shooting 57 percent from the field in 28 minutes against Creighton (Feb. 17). She sank 10 points against Arkansas State (Dec. 2), making 57 percent of her shot attempts from the field and set a career high in steals with three against Arizona State (Dec. 3). Nelson carries a 3.94 grade-point average and is pursuing a degree in psychology.
The criteria for the Missouri Valley Conference's Scholar-Athlete Team voting parallels the CoSIDA (College Sports Information Directors of America) standards for Capital One Academic All-America voting. Nominees must be starters or important reserves with at least a 3.20 cumulative grade-point average (4.0 scale).
Student-athletes must have reached sophomore athletic and academic standing at their institution (true freshmen and redshirt freshmen were not eligible) and must have completed at least one full academic year at their institution. He must have played in 75 percent of his team's games, or played in the State Farm MVC Championship this past week.
The Redbirds enter the 2012 State Farm Missouri Valley Conference Tournament in St. Charles, Mo., as the No. 2 seed. ISU will play Friday at Family Arena at 6:05 p.m., against either Drake or Evansville.
