ORANGE PARK, Fla. – The Illinois State women’s golf team currently sits in 16th place after posting a team score of 312 following the first round of the JMU Eagle Landing Invite at the par-72, 6,282 yard Eagle Landing Golf Club. South Florida leads the 18-team field with a score of 287.
Head women’s golf coach Darby Sligh would like to see her squad execute better.
“I can honestly say we are close to breaking through,” Sligh said. “It’s just never easy to continuously struggle at something. We know that execution is the missing link, and when it falls into place we’ll be prepared for low scores. Being at the bottom of the pack is not a place we ever want to be comfortable in.”
Sophomore Brianna Cooper led the Redbird effort in the first round, posting a four-over-par 76 to put her in a tie for 37th. She was followed up by junior Katie Jean and sophomore Jordyn Wyzgowski, who both finished with a six-over-par 78. Senior Hannah Bachman completed round one with an eight-over-par 80, while sophomore Carlee Cossell carded a 13-over-par 85.
Competing individually, sophomore Rachel Powers finished her first day with a nine-over-par 81.
Illinois State will continue with the second round of the JMU Eagle Landing Invite on Saturday.
