April 15, 2012

BLOOMINGTON, Ill. - The Illinois State women's tennis team (9-11, 3-2 MVC) was lead to another Missouri Valley Conference victory over Creighton on Sunday, 6-1.

"They gave us a good fight," said head coach Chris Hoover. "We came in ready to fight, and I think the team did a great job rebounding after yesterday's loss."

Illinois State snagged the doubles point after wins in the top and bottom flights. Aniko Kiss and Emmie Marx continued an early lead to hold their Creighton opponents to two games for the match, and finished with a win of 8-2 in the No.1 position. The pairing of Stefanie Youngberg and Hannah Esker downed Creighton, 8-4, in the third position, snapping a two-match losing streak.

Wichita posted three quick games in the second flight, and Ariane Maack and Phyllis Tigges were unable to stop the Jays from downing ISU, falling 8-2.

Kiss and Hartjes, playing in the first position for singles, traded games during the first set until Kiss broke away, posting the first win of the match. Kiss won in the third set, outlasting her Creighton opponent, 7-5, 3-6, 6-3. At No.2, Marx posted a quick win over her opponent, 6-1, 6-2, and Tigges battled the Jays into the third, posting a win of 6-2, 3-6, 6-4. In the fifth, Youngberg made quick work of her opponent, 6-3, 6-3. Esker sealed the victory after downing her opponent in an eight game professional set, downing her 8-3 in the sixth flight.

Carolina Abello posted the only Redbird point loss of the day. She fell, 6-3, 6-3, in the fourth flight.

"We did to Creighton what Wichita State did to us yesterday," said Hoover. "It felt good to win."
