NORMAL- Ill. The Illinois State men’s and women’s track & field and cross country teams signed three more student-athletes to National Letters of Intent (NLI) to continue their academic and athletic careers at Illinois State, as announced by head track & field coach Elvis Forde Wednesday.

The additions to the 2012 Illinois State recruiting class includes: Antonio Foster (Chesapeake, Va. | Western Branch), Kourtnee Hall (Kane, Ill. | Jersey Community) and Kaley Ummel (Lexington, Ill. | Lexington).

 Kourtnee Hall

Kaley Ummel  Distance | XC Lexington, Ill. | Lexington

Redbirds Antonio Foster | Chesapeake, Va. | Western Branch High School

Foster joins the team predominantly as a hurdler and 400-meter dash runner. He holds an indoor personal-best 7.95 in the 55-meter hurdles, which he set at the Southeastern District Invitational this past January. In addition, he holds a career-best 56.01 in the 400-meter hurdles, which was set at the Russell Blunt East Coast Invitational last July. He enters Illinois State with an academic and career interest in nursing and health care management.

Coach Forde on Antonio . . .
“Antonio has a lot of potential entering our program,” said Forde. “He has done a lot during the summer track season, and we expect him to grow into an outstanding hurdler and 400-meter guy. He has a tremendous frame and hard work ethic which really drove us to him. He has the talent to be one of the best in our conference during his tenure here.”

Redbirds Kourtnee Hall | Kane, Ill. | Jersey Community

Hall commits to Illinois State as one of the top throwers in the state of Illinois. She holds a personal-best of 43-02.25 in the shot put, which she set at the 2011 IHSA Girls State Track & Field Championships, placing second. So far this outdoor season, Hall has racked up two first-place finishes, and a second in just three meets of competition. She will enter as a three-time IHSA state qualifier in the shot put.

Coach Forde on Kourtnee . . .
“Kourtnee is one of the better throwers in the state of Illinois,” said Forde. “We have some big shoes to fill in losing Tori [Ziegler], and we think that Kourtnee can begin to fill that role as a freshman. She has shown tremendous improvement over the course of the last year, and she is very athletic. She has the potential to blossom into an outstanding thrower for Illinois State.”

Redbirds Kaley Ummel | Lexington, Ill. | Lexington High School

Ummel enters primarily as a distance runner, competing in cross country in the fall, while running middle distance on the track (800-meter, 1,500-meter and 1,600-meter). At Lexington, Ummel was a four-time state qualifier in cross country and track combined, placing as high as third in the 4X800-meter relay. She holds personal-best times of 18:32 in the three-miles for cross country, 2:16.12 in the 800-meter run, 5:11.27 in the 1,600-meter run and 11:32.98 in the 3,200-meter run. She ran a 4:51 in the 1,500-meters at the Junior Olympic Track & Field Championships in 2008. Her mother also ran for Illinois State while she attended school.

Coach Forde on Kaley. . .
“Kaley is a local girl with roots to Illinois State,” said Forde. “She has accomplished some tremendous things during her tenure at Lexington, and we are excited to see what she can do this year at the state level. She brings two things with her to the table. One, she will be a consistent performer for us in cross country, and two, she will add the depth we are looking for in our middle distance events on the track. It is always nice to draw back a local girl with connections to Illinois State.”
