With a little over a week to go before the Illinois State baseball team hosts BaseBald Day, the Redbirds have met more than half of their fundraising goal for the St. Baldrick's Foundation. However, ISU still needs to raise $1,600 to ensure that the entire team, including coaches, will shave their heads following the Sunday, May 6 game against Southern Illinois.
"This is for a great cause," Illinois State head baseball coach Mark Kingston said. "Any time you can help fight cancer, there is no reason not to do it. As a team, we're all willing to shave our heads for the cause, and we hope that a lot of people continue to step up and donate money to help fight cancer."
Redbird fans can contribute to ISU's BaseBald Day cause by clicking here. For $100, fans can participate in the postgame head shaving event by taking the first swipe of a team member's hair. Or for a $500 contribution, fans can swipe an assistant coach's hair. A $1,000 donation has already been given to shave Kingston's head.
The purpose of BaseBald Day is to raise at least $5,000 for the St. Baldrick's Foundation - an organization dedicated to raising money for childhood cancer research. BaseBald, a division of the St. Baldrick's Foundation, was started by members of the 2007 North Carolina baseball team who shaved their heads in an effort to raise money for 18-year-old teammate Chase Jones, who was diagnosed with cancer. Illinois State pitching coach Bill Mohl worked side-by-side with Jones for seven years at the Rick Jones Baseball Camp through Tulane in New Orleans, and Mohl is spearheading ISU's event.
In an effort to increase awareness for ISU's BaseBald Day and the St. Baldrick's Foundation, Redbird Productions has released a promotional video, featuring Illinois State junior center fielder Chad Hinshaw. The video can be viewed by clicking here. Another video featuring senior closer Kenny Long will be released Monday.
All donations must be made through the official BaseBald Day website, by clicking here. Any barber interested in becoming an "official barber" and/or sponsor of the event should contact Marketing and Promotions graduate assistant Lisa Juliano at lmjulia@ilstu.edu for more information. A $100 donation is required to the St. Baldrick's Foundation to become a sponsor for the event.
Admission to the May 6 BaseBald game, along with every game at Duffy Bass Field this season, will be free.
