Freiburg Leads Redbirds at NYX Hoosier Invitational

April 7, 2012

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – The Illinois State men’s golf team is currently in 13th place following the first two rounds Saturday at the 15-school NYX Hoosier Invitational. The Redbirds tallied a score of 585 (294-291), while Northwestern leads all teams with a score of 558 (281-277) at the par-71, 6,813 yard IU Golf Course.

Head men’s golf coach Ray Kralis would like to see his team move up in the field in the final round.

“Parker Freiburg had a very solid day, and his first round 70 kept us in the mix of a tightly bunched field,” Kralis said. “The weather conditions were great for golf which makes it hard to create much separation among 15 teams. The green conditions were challenging, which made it difficult to get hot with the putter and go low. That combination brought the importance of the mental game to the forefront again, and the ability to accept the outcomes and detach from negative emotions was critical today and will be tomorrow as well. For the most part, we carried ourselves well and stayed in the present, and we will need to take it to an even higher level tomorrow to make the move we are capable of.”

Freiburg’s (70-73) one-over-par, 143 effort currently places him in a tie for 15th. Sophomore Wils Hawn (74-72) is presently in a tie for 32nd after carding a four-over-par 146. Senior Eric Meier (74-75) and junior Matt Solis (76-73) are at seven-over-par and in a tie for 56th after they both posted a score of 149. In a tie for 75th, junior Ricky Hearden (82-73) finished day one at 13-over-par for a score of 155.

Illinois State will conclude play at the tournament Sunday morning.
