NORMAL, Ill. - Illinois State junior outside hitter Shannon McGlaughlin received the 2012 Dr. Linda Herman Endowed Scholarship Thursday, as announced by ISU head coach Melissa Myers. McGlaughlin is the seventh recipient of the scholarship named in honor of the former Redbird coach and administrator.
McGlaughin started all 32 matches and led the team in kills (419), kills per set (3.41) and points (459) during the 2011 season. She recorded double digit kills in all but six matches and was named to the Wolverine Invitational All-Tournament Team and the Skyhawk Invitational Most Valuable Player (MVP).
"I am so grateful to be the recipient of such an honor," McGlaughlin said. "Dr. Linda Herman has made a great impact on the Illinois State volleyball program and women's athletics as a whole. She has inspired so many to be their best on the court and in the classroom. Dr. Herman has touched so many lives, and I can only hope to someday do the same."
The Morton, Ill., native ranked second in the Valley in kills per set, third on the team in hitting percentage (.221) and forth in digs (256). McGlaughlin was a Missouri Valley Conference second-team selection and named to the Capital One/CoSIDA Academic All-District Second Team and the MVC Scholar-Athlete First Team.
The scholarship, which is awarded annually to a Redbird volleyball student-athlete, was created in honor of former volleyball coach and interim athletics director Dr. Linda Herman in September 2005. Rose Stadel, the widow of Joe Warner, handed over the proceeds from the 2005 Joe Warner Memorial Golf Classic to initiate funds for the endowment. The late Warner spent three decades as a prominent business and community leader in central Illinois before his tragic death in a 2002 plane crash. He was an avid Redbird fan and supporter.
Herman was one of Illinois State's most influential administrators. She was named the 1995 National Associate of Collegiate Women Athletic Administrators (NACWAA) District V Administrator of the Year, and was also the recipient of the Bloomington/Normal YWCA Women of Distinction Award for outstanding leadership and excellence in education in 1997.
Herman spent seven years as the head Redbird volleyball coach, and served four separate stints as ISU's interim athletics director. She was inducted into the Illinois State Athletics Hall of Fame in September 2005, and in December 2003, was inducted into the American Volleyball Coaches Association's (AVCA) inaugural Hall of Fame class.
The Herman Endowed Scholarship is one of 24 endowed scholarships available to Illinois State student-athletes that are funded by private donors. For more information about establishing an endowed scholarship, please call the Weisbecker Scholarship Fund office at (309) 438-3803.
