NORMAL, Ill.- Illinois State junior Wils Hawn was named the 2012 recipient of the L. Durwood Boone Endowed Scholarship Friday, as announced by head men's golf coach Ray Kralis. The Boone Scholarship is traditionally awarded to the most improved men's golfer from the previous season.
Hawn competed in 34 rounds and held the second-lowest team season-stroke average of 75.3 during the 2011-12 season. He recorded a season-best two-round score of 143 (72-71) and finished sixth at the Cardinal Intercollegiate. The Waterloo, Ill., native placed 10th at the 2012 State Farm Missouri Valley Championships with a three-round score of 223 (71-76-76).
"Wils continued improving this past year taking his game to another level and demonstrated that he has what it takes to lead this team and contend at each tournament," Kralis said. "He takes responsibility for his performances and is committed to being the best he can be. I believe he has what it takes to become a very special player for us and look for him to emerge as a team leader this season."
During the 2010-11 season, Hawn competed in 28 rounds and had a season stroke average of 76.5. He shot a personal-best at the Cardinal Intercollegiate, after recording a 2-under-par 214 (70-72-72). He tied for 28th at the 2011 State Farm Men's Golf Championships , after completing the three-round competition with a score of 239 (79-85-75) and was a member of the lineup that finished second at the Valley Championships.
The Boone scholarship was established with an initial grant from the estate of the late L. Durwood Boone, whose playing skills inspired the start of the Redbird golf program in the 1930s. It was awarded to a Redbird golfer for the first time in 1995.
