2012-13 Women's Golf Schedule
NORMAL, Ill. - The Illinois State women's golf team will compete against some of the nation's top teams during the 2012-13 season, as announced by head coach Darby Sligh. During the upcoming season, the Redbirds will compete in five fall tournaments, before jumping into the competitive spring season with seven tournaments.
"This is a great schedule for us to be able to compete against some of the best teams in the country and also get a chance to visit new parts of the country that we haven't traveled to in the past five years," Sligh said. "I am extremely excited to be able to add the Hawai'i event because of its strong field and for the opportunity it gives the entire team to bond over spring break. This team is more than ready to showcase their talents this year, and it will be fun to watch how high they set the bar for teams to follow."
The Redbirds will open the 2012 fall schedule, Sept. 8-9, at home with the Redbird Invitational, which will be held at the Weibring Golf Club at Illinois State University. ISU's first road trip will be to the Cardinal Cup (Sept. 17-18), hosted by Louisville at the Cardinal Club in Simpsonville, Ky. From there, the Redbirds will travel to Lawrence, Kan., to compete in the Marilynn Smith Sunflower Tournament (Sept. 24-25) at the Alvamar Country Club, which is being hosted by Kansas.
The next week, ISU will head to Columbia, Mo., to participate in the Johnie Imes Invitational (Oct. 1-2) at the Club at Old Hawthorne, a 54-hole tournament hosted by Missouri. ISU will end the fall campaign at the Hoosier Fall Invitational (Oct. 13-14) hosted by Indiana in Florence, Ind., at the Belterra Resort and Casino. After a three and a half month break from competition, ISU will head south to compete in the Illinois Challenge (Feb. 3) with Illinois in Venice, Fla., on the Venice Golf and Country Club. Two weeks later, the Redbirds will travel to Blanco, Texas, to take on the competition at the Jim West Challenge (Feb. 17-18) hosted by Texas State at the Vaaler Creek Golf Course. The following week, Illinois State will head back to Florida to compete in the Sir Pizza Terrapin Challenge (Feb. 25-26), which is hosted by Maryland. The 54-hole challenge will be held at Shula's Golf Club.
ISU will only compete once during the month of March, with a trip to Kaneohe Bay, Oahu, Hawai'i, for the Dr. Donnis Thompson Invitational (March 12-13) over spring break. The Redbirds will play in the 54-hole tournament hosted by Hawai'i at the Kaneohe Klipper Golf Course. The Redbirds will then return stateside to complete the remainder of the spring schedule.
Illinois State will head back south to Pinehurst, N.C., to compete in the Pinehurst Challenge (April 1-2), which will be hosted by the College of Charleston at the Pinehurst Golf Club. The team will have a couple weeks off, before heading to the IU Invitational (April 13-14) in Bloomington, Ind., at the Indiana University Golf Course. On April 21-23, the Redbirds will compete in the 2013 Missouri Valley Conference Championships in Sunrise Beach, Mo., as Missouri State hosts the 54-hole tournament to close out the regular season.
