NORMAL, Ill.- Junior Katie Jean was awarded the Helen Cushman Endowed scholarship for the 2012-13 season, as announced by head women's golf coach Darby Sligh Thursday. The scholarship is awarded to a women's golf team member who has shown excellence through academics, golf expertise and dedication to the game.
During the 2011-12 season, Jean competed in 28 rounds with a scoring average of 76.1. She tied for fourth at the Redbird Invitational with a three-round 224(78-76-70) and compiled five top-10 finishes throughout the season. Jean placed first at 2012 State Farm Missouri Valley Conference Championships, after producing a season-best three-round score of 220 (74-74-72).
"Katie embodies all of the characteristics that this scholarship was founded upon," Sligh said. "She is a tireless worker that always puts her team first. Her attention to detail in the classroom, in practice and in competition has paid off, making her one of the best and most decorated players in the MVC. I can't think of a greater ambassador for Illinois State and the women's golf program."
For the second-consecutive year, Jean was named to the Missouri Valley Conference Women's Golf Scholar-Athlete Team and was the recipient of the Elite 18 Award at the MVC Championships. Possessing a cumulative grade-point average of 4.0 in actuarial science, Jean was presented the Elite 18 award after holding the highest grade-point average among the tournament's top-18 finishers.
Throughout the 2010-11 season, Jean played in 26 rounds and held a scoring average of 78.9. She had a season-best performance at the Redbird Invitational, where she placed sixth with a three-round 228 (73-79-76). The Rantoul, Ill., native tied for 18th at the 2011 MVC Championship and was named to the National Golf Coaches Association (NGCA) Division I All-American Scholar Team.
