The Illinois State women's golf team will compete in its first road tournament of the 2012-13 season Monday and Tuesday at the Cardinal Cup in Simpsonville, Ky., hosted by Louisville. In the 54-hole tournament at the Cardinal Club Course, the Redbirds will face off against a 15-team field, including Missouri Valley Conference foe Bradley.
ISU finished third at the Redbird Invitational (Sept. 8-9) and head women's golf coach Darby Sligh wants her team to remain aggressive heading into the tournament.
"After falling just short in our home event last weekend, it is important that we make a solid plan and continue to be aggressive in our attack," Sligh said. "Katie (Jean) is coming off an individual win and we need to feed off of her confidence as a unit."
Senior Katie Jean will lead the Redbird lineup, as she earned Valley Golfer of the Week honors for her performance in the season opener by topping the individual leader board at the Redbird Invitational. Jean finished the three-round tournament with an impressive score of 218 (70-75-73). She tallied six birdies in the first round of play, finishing with 13 birdies at the end of three rounds. Jean led Illinois State to a third-place finish with a team score of 930 (300-315-315) at the Weibring Golf Club.
Also competing for Illinois State will be juniors Rachel Powers and Jordyn Wyzgowski, along with sophomore Hayley Guyton and freshman Courtnee Cossell. Junior Carlee Cossell will compete as an individual.
Besides competing against Bradley, the Redbirds will also go up against Akron, Charleston Southern, Cincinnati, East Tennessee State, Georgia State, James Madison, Louisville, Maryland, Missouri, UNC-Wilmington, Redlands Junior College, Rollins College and Tennessee-Chattanooga.
Monday's 36-hole first round will begin at 7:40 a.m. (CST) with a shotgun start, and Tuesday's final round will also get underway at 7:40 a.m. (CST) with a shotgun start.
