Former Redbird D.A. Weibring Designs Practice Facility at Weibring Golf Club

Sept. 25, 2012

NORMAL, Ill. - On Sept. 20-21, former Illinois State men's golfer and PGA tour member D.A. Weibring was on campus to give back to the ISU community, as he and his partner are designing the new driving range and short game practice facility at the Weibring Golf Club.

Weibring was a four-year letterwinner at ISU and has won five PGA events during his professional golf career, while also being neamed the PGA Tour Comeback Player of the Year in 1991. The 1975 graduate also has five wins on the Champions Tour and was inducted to the Illinois State Percy Family Hall of Fame in 1980. On July 27, 2007, the Illinois State University's Board of Trustees approved the naming of the University golf course as the Weibring Golf Club at Illinois State University in recognition of Weibring's commitment and contribution to Redbird Athletics and his achievements as a PGA member.

The Weibring-Wolfard design was made possible, after a donation by Jim and Carole Mounier. The donation for the driving range and short game practice area will give the ISU golf team a much needed on-site practice area for player development and will also serve as a recruiting tool.

The location for the new practice facility will be back along hole No. 2, near the northwest corner of the course. The process will include several phases. Phase One will include necessary drainage and irrigation work, shaping of tees and target greens and seeding. Phase Two will include a short game area for player development. Future phases include the addition of a short course, possible practice holes and team building. The new facility is an ideal location and will become the new home of Redbird golf.

D.A. Weibring took time out of his busy schedule to share his thoughts on the new development with GoRedbrds.com.
