NORMAL, Ill. - After dropping its season opener at Northern Kentucky, the Illinois State women’s basketball team will make the short trip up to Chicago to take on in-state rival DePaul. The Redbirds and the Blue Demons will tip off Monday at 7 p.m.
At NKU, turnovers and a scoreless 10-minute period in the second half proved to be the differences in the game, as ISU dropped its season-opener, 61-48. Alexis Foley led Illinois State with nine points, shooting 50 percent (4-of-8) from the field. Chloe Nelson added eight, while Stekara Hall, Maddie Oliver and Brianna Puni each scored six points. Octavia Crump brought down seven rebounds, as both Crump and Puni grabbed three offensive board­s and Alison Seberger pulled down six rebounds.
Illinois State and DePaul will meet for the 13th time in program history Monday night at 7 p.m. in the McGrath-Phillips Arena. The
Blue Demons lead the all-time series 9-3, including five-straight wins since the 2006-07 season. DePaul has a 4-1 advantage in games played in Chicago. Illinois State’s last win over its in-counterpart rival came nearly three decades ago on Jan. 11, 1984, when the Redbirds won, 78-65, at DePaul.

ISU HOOPS FALLS TO NKU IN SEASON OPENER
The Illinois State women’s basketball team (0-1) fell in its season-opener, 61-48, at Northern Kentucky (2-0) on Nov. 13. Alexis Foley led Illinois State with nine points, shooting 50 percent (4-of-8) from the field. Chloe Nelson added eight, while Stekara Hall, Maddie Oliver and Brianna Puni each scored six points. Octavia Crump brought down seven rebounds, as both Crump and Puni grabbed three offensive boards and Alison Seberger pulled down six rebounds. Illinois State shot 36 percent from the field for the game, while Northern Kentucky shot 40 percent thanks to a 61 percent shooting effort in the second half. ISU outrebounded NKU, 41-24, including 16 offensive boards.
DIFFERENCES IN THE GAME
Turnovers and a scoreless 10-minute period in the second half proved to be the differences in the game against Northern Kentucky. Illinois State committed 28 turnovers, including 15 in the second half. While the turnovers proved to be a problem in the second half, ISU also went scoreless for 10:02 late in the final half. During the scoring drought, ISU only made three free throws. The Redbirds also struggled from beyond the arc, as they were 2-for-13 from three-point range, shooting just 15 percent.
CONTROLLING THE BOARDS
Despite the scoring drought and the turnovers, the Redbirds controlled the boards in their season opener at Northern Kentucky. ISU pulled down 41 rebounds, including 16 offensive boards. Northern Kentucky only managed to grab 24 rebounds in the game with five coming on the offensive end of the court. The 16 offensive rebounds also gave ISU 10 second-chance points.
A VALUABLE BENCH
In the 61-48 loss at NKU, the ISU bench proved to be useful, as the Redbird reserves scored 23 points, compared to Northern Kentucky’s eight bench points. Nine Redbirds scored in the game, despite no one scoring in double-digits.
