FREEPORT, Grand Bahama Island - During the Thanksgiving holiday, it is important to realize all that we are thankful for, while giving back. The Illinois State women's basketball team did just that during its holiday trip to the Bahamas over Thanksgiving break. On Wednesday, November 27th, the Redbirds took timeout of their busy schedule to volunteer at a local school in a neglected area of the Bahamas.

At the West End Primary School, the Redbirds interacted with the students, ranging in age from kindergarten to sixth grade, over the lunch hour. Head coach Barb Smithgot the event started by teaching the school children about Illinois State, hard work, education and where Illinois is located in the United States.

Smith pointed out how important it was for the student-athletes to give back during their tropical vacation.

"We incorporate leadership into our program, and this is one way to come to a beautiful and fun location, but also to give back to the community here," Smith said. "We give back to the community in Bloomington-Normal, and we thought it would be fun to do that in a different area. I think it has been one of the neatest things we have done on the trip. We went out and learned about the island, while giving back to it and having fun in the process. I think it gives us all a chance to see that we are very fortunate to have what we have. It makes you appreciate what you have and who you have in your life."

Illinois State was the only team in the tournament to take time to give back to a local community.

Once everyone from Illinois State was introduced and after a brief question and answer segment, the Redbirds and the students took to the school yard. The focus of the outside activities was on the basketball court since the women's basketball program provided the school with five new Nike basketballs during the visit.

Senior guard Chloe Nelsonpointed out how important it is to give back.

"That is going to be one of the highlights of the trip," Nelson said with a smile. "The children's smiles made us smile, while having fun with great company. It was a treat to be with them. We can get caught up in our day-to-day life, but to do an activity like this definitely helps you appreciate what you have."

The Redbirds and students played on the playground equipment and competed in half-court basketball games. The day concluded with a few basketball drills and team relay races.

Sophomore guard Alexis Foleymade memories playing with the children that she will never forget.

"It was an absolute blast, being there and seeing how it brightened their day," Foley said. "It actually affected both groups, and the whole team loved it. It was the highlight of the trip. Being able to donate the basketballs meant the world to them and gave something more for their school. It really made an impact on their lives, even if it was a small one."

After their time at the school came to an end, Illinois State went back to work to get ready for the 2013 Junkanoo Jam, but the same questioned was asked by the entire team throughout the rest of the trip.

"Do we get to go back to the school?"
