NORMAL, Ill. - During a college basketball season, student-athletes schedules are filled with classes, practices, study halls, watching film and several other things that come up on a day-to-day basis, but during the holiday season, it is important to give back. The Redbird women's basketball team traded in their basketballs for crafts, and donated its time with Big Brothers Big Sisters of Central Illinois.
Head coach Barb Smith felt the event was a fun experience for all parties involved and created lasting memories.
“It was great for ISU Athletics to host the holiday party for Big Brothers Big Sisters in our community, and we wanted to support the work of mentoring young boys and girls and the numerous adults that volunteer their time for this worthy cause,” Smith said. “Our players were excited to meet so many of the young kids and talk to them about basketball and being a student-athlete at ISU.”
Big Brothers Big Sisters mentees, as well as their mentors, enjoyed a holiday party that was filled with making various crafts at Redbird Arena, while the Redbirds went around to each table to spend time with the children and adults.
Big Brothers Big Sisters strives to provide children facing adversity with strong and enduring, professionally supported 1-on-1 relationships that change their lives for the better, forever.
After finals week, the Redbirds return to the court Sunday, Dec. 15, at Fordham at 1 p.m. (CST).
